Crowns & Bridgework

Preventative care plays an important role in maintaining oral health, but in some cases, teeth may become damaged due to decay, injury or wear. When this happens, restorative treatments at Dr Patrick Meaney & Associates can include crowns and bridges. Dr Ahmed Elkhatib provides:

  • Crowns â€“ A custom-made cap placed over a damaged tooth. It is designed to restore the tooth’s structure and function while also matching the natural appearance of surrounding teeth. Crowns are often used when a tooth is fractured, significantly decayed or has undergone root canal treatment. The crown is cemented into place, covering the entire visible portion of the tooth.

  • Bridges – Consists of three or more connected crowns, with the outer crowns attached to natural teeth on either side of the gap. The artificial tooth (pontic) in the middle fills the space left by the missing tooth. Bridges are a fixed solution, meaning they are secured in place and do not need to be removed like dentures.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a treatment used to save a tooth that is infected or severely decayed. When the pulp becomes damaged due to decay, trauma or gum disease, the infection can spread, leading to pain and potential tooth loss. A root canal removes the infected pulp, cleans the canal and seals the tooth to prevent further damage.

A root canal is often required when:

  • Decay reaches the pulp, causing infection
  • Trauma damages the tooth, affecting the nerves
  • Severe gum disease leads to bacterial infection in the root canal

Dr Elkhatib will numb the area, isolate the tooth and remove the infected pulp using small instruments. The root canal is cleaned, disinfected and sealed with a temporary or permanent filling. For more information, make a booking at Dr Patrick J. Meaney & Associates.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the process of placing a crown or bridge?

The process of placing a crown or bridge involves several steps:

    • Evaluation & Digital Imaging â€“ The damaged or missing tooth is assessed, and digital scans are taken to create a precise model for the restoration.
    • Tooth Preparation – For crowns and bridges, the affected tooth or supporting teeth are shaped to allow for a secure fit.
    • Restoration Placement – Once the crown or bridge is ready, it is cemented into place, restoring the tooth’s appearance and function.
  • What are the symptoms of an infected tooth?

Common symptoms that may indicate an infection include:

    • Persistent pain, either constant or when biting
    • Swelling in the gums near the affected tooth
    • Blemishes or pus drainage, leading to a bad taste in the mouth
  • What happens if I don't get a root canal?

If a root canal is needed but not performed, the infection can spread deeper into the jawbone, affect surrounding teeth and lead to the formation of an abscess. An abscess can cause severe discomfort and, in some cases, lead to serious health complications if the bacteria enter the bloodstream. Eventually, the tooth may die and fall out, and the surrounding bone may also be damaged.

  • How long does a root canal-treated tooth last?

With proper care, a root canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime. However, since the tooth no longer has a living pulp, it may become brittle over time. This is why a dental crown is often recommended to reinforce the tooth, especially if it is a molar or premolar that undergoes heavy chewing forces. Regular dental check-ups, good oral hygiene and avoiding excessive pressure on the tooth can help prolong its lifespan.
