When To Consider Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are located at the very back of the mouth. Some individuals have enough space for their wisdom teeth to grow in properly, while others may experience complications. When wisdom teeth do not fully erupt or grow at an angle, they can put pressure on surrounding teeth, cause pain or lead to infection.

At Patrick J. Meaney & Associates, we may recommend wisdom tooth extraction if there are signs of:

  • Tooth decay due to trapped bacteria around partially erupted teeth
  • Gum inflammation or infection from food particles getting lodged in the gums
  • Crowding or damage to neighbouring teeth from pressure caused by wisdom tooth growth
  • Cysts or tumours forming around impacted teeth
  • Recurrent infections in the gums or jaw
  • Pain or discomfort that does not go away

A consultation and dental examination help determine whether wisdom tooth removal is the best option. Contact us on (02) 4869 3111. We see patients from Moss Vale, Bowral, Mittagong and the Southern Highlands.

Recovery Process & Tips

The recovery period for wisdom tooth removal typically lasts 2-4 days, depending on the complexity of the extraction. Some swelling and mild discomfort are expected, and pain relief medication may be provided to help manage symptoms.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks, but following these guidelines can help promote healing and reduce discomfort:

  • Apply pressure to the gauze pad placed over the extraction site, replacing it as needed to manage bleeding. If bleeding continues beyond 24 hours, contact us
  • Be mindful of numbness to avoid accidentally biting the cheeks or tongue
  • Keep the head elevated with pillows instead of lying flat to help reduce bleeding
  • Use an ice pack on the outside of the face to manage swelling & discomfort
  • Avoid strenuous activities for at least 48 hours to prevent excessive bleeding
  • Stick to soft foods like mashed potatoes, yoghurt & pureed vegetables during recovery
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water several times a day to soothe swelling & keep the area clean

If wisdom teeth are causing discomfort or affecting oral health, an assessment with Dr Ahmed Elkhatib can help determine the best approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the signs wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Common signs include jaw pain, swelling, difficulty chewing, gum tenderness, recurring infections, bad breath or pressure on nearby teeth. Some people also experience headaches or discomfort in the back of the mouth.

  • At what age should wisdom teeth be removed?

Wisdom teeth typically emerge between ages 17-25. If they are causing issues, removal is often recommended earlier rather than later to prevent complications. However, adults of any age can have them removed if necessary.

  • How long does wisdom tooth extraction take?

A simple wisdom tooth extraction can take 20-40 minutes, while impacted teeth may take longer. The total appointment, including preparation and recovery time, is usually about one to two hours.

  • When should I call the dentist after wisdom tooth removal?

Contact the dentist if you experience severe pain, prolonged bleeding (beyond 24 hours), excessive swelling, fever or pus at the extraction site. These may be signs of infection or other complications requiring medical attention.
